GMB WELCOME LIVING WAGE AT MILTON KEYNES COUNCIL AND CONTRACTORS

This shows that despite another round of significant cuts in Local Authority budgets, it is possible to make a difference to people’s standard of living says GMB

GMB, the union for public service workers, welcomed the announcement that Milton Keynes Council has achieved Living wage accreditation from the Living Wage Foundation.

Richard O’Leary, Regional Organiser, said, “GMB has been instrumental in negotiating a living wage for GMB members working for Milton Keynes Council and its contractors. The living wage, which was first applied in Milton Keynes in April 2015, will increase to £8.25 an hour by April 2016 and is a significant benefit to GMB members working in Milton Keynes.

This shows that despite another round of significant cuts in Local Authority budgets, it is possible to make a difference to people’s standard of living.

GMB has always had a positive relationship with Milton Keynes Council and this once again demonstrates that good industrial relations can make a real difference to Milton Keynes. The extra money paid to council workers will end up back in the local economy.

GMB is calling on all local Authorities and employers who haven’t already done so to follow Milton Keynes Council’s example and pay the real living wage.”
